Smith steps down as Conway football coach
LOG CABIN DEMOCRAT
There will soon be a new head coach for the Conway High football team. After 18 years of service, Kenny Smith will step aside to accept other responsibilities in the Conway Public School District, according to school officials.

Smith finished his tenure with a 129-75 (63.2 percent) record with the Wampus Cats. He had coached in Conway for 25 years in all and won six conference championships, as well as played in the 1993 Class AAAAA state title game.

"No one bleeds Wampus Cat Blue any more than Coach Smith," Conway superintendent Greg Murry Said. "Our district and our community appreciate all that he has done to bring pride to our football program. We wish him the very best as he begins a new chapter in his professional career." The Cats have had their rough times in recent seasons, including a 2-8 record this past season. Conway, which has not made the state playoffs since 2006, also went 3-7 in 2007.

Murry said the district will immediately begin the process of finding a replacement for Smith.

Rasure announces run for Greenbrier board

Ken Rasure is seeking the Position 4 seat on the Greenbrier School District's Board of Education.

Rasure is employed as a manager in the Enterprise Project Management Office at Acxiom and said in his line of work he sees daily how technology is shaping the future for the children. It is his responsibility to mentor and make sure his project managers are well-informed and able to lead their teams to be the best they can be.

Rasure said he and his family are very involved in education issues. His wife is a teacher with Conway Adult Education's job training program and a Girl Scout Troop leader, as well as a board member for the Faulkner County Literacy Council. His son and wife are both school teachers and his daughter, Katie, will be in the fourth-grade, attending Wooster Elementary School.

Rasure said his family moved to Greenbrier due to the school's high rating. He and his wife have three children, Chris Clare and Katie.

"Our experience with the Greenbrier teachers has been wonderful and I want to make sure that continues to be the case for all parents and children," Rasure said. "I'm running for a position on the school board because I believe I can help our schools become even better than they are. I see great things happening in Greenbrier and I want to be a part of making sure great things continue to happen in our schools."

"We need to think about what kind of world our children will live in five and 10 years from now and prepare them to excel in that world. We need to promote an atmosphere that encourages our children to not think of a high school diploma as the final goal, but to think of it as a step toward a college or technical degree that can help assure their futures. I want to ensure my daughter and the other Greenbrier students are given the opportunity to receive the best education possible in preparation to compete in a world that has become increasingly smaller and more complex. We have to be willing to invest in our teachers and maintain a pay level where we retain and attract the best. The safety of our students and staff must continue to be a top priority."

"We need to keep focusing on our drug awareness programs. We need to understand what is behind our high school dropout rates and teen pregnancy rates and do whatever we can to encourage our children to stay engaged in school and away from drugs and other negative temptations."

"I believe we need to be fiscally responsible with our community's money and spend it where it will do the most good. We need to think 'outside of the box' and look for ways to partner with the resources in our community to attract additional support for our schools. To stay competitive we have to get the most we can out of every dollar."
