Smith steps down as Conway football coach
LOG CABIN DEMOCRAT
There will soon be a new head coach for the Conway High football team. After 18 years of service, Kenny Smith will step aside to accept other responsibilities in the Conway Public School District, according to school officials.

Smith finished his tenure with a 129-75 (63.2 percent) record with the Wampus Cats. He had coached in Conway for 25 years in all and won six conference championships, as well as played in the 1993 Class AAAAA state title game.

"No one bleeds Wampus Cat Blue any more than Coach Smith," Conway superintendent Greg Murry Said. "Our district and our community appreciate all that he has done to bring pride to our football program. We wish him the very best as he begins a new chapter in his professional career." The Cats have had their rough times in recent seasons, including a 2-8 record this past season. Conway, which has not made the state playoffs since 2006, also went 3-7 in 2007.

Murry said the district will immediately begin the process of finding a replacement for Smith.

First State Bank collecting toys for Children's Hospital

First State Bank has two locations that will be collecting toys for Arkansas Children's Hospital. This toy drive is being held in honor of Riley Townsell, whose mother is an employee of First State Bank/First Data Solutions. Riley is undergoing treatment at ACH.

When children at Arkansas Children's Hospital have a procedure, they get to visit the toy closet and get a prize. This is a huge motivator for children and the closet is getting bare. 100 percent of the toys raised in this drive will be used to fill up the toy closet.

"We have been humbled and are thankful for the outpouring of support for our family during this time," remarked Donna Townsell. "People have asked what they can do to help. We feel like this toy drive will benefit many children, not only our own and we would be honored by the communities support."

Toys can be dropped of at First State Bank's Main Office, 620 Chestnut in Conway, and the West Branch located at 754 Salem Road also in Conway.

Toys are to be new and if packaged, unopened. Items for ages 0-18 both male and female are needed. The hospital will not accept toys that depict violence in any way. No guns, swords, "action" or fighting figures. A list of suggested items can be found on the ACH website: http://www.archildrens.org/volunteer/.
