Smith steps down as Conway football coach
LOG CABIN DEMOCRAT
There will soon be a new head coach for the Conway High football team. After 18 years of service, Kenny Smith will step aside to accept other responsibilities in the Conway Public School District, according to school officials.

Smith finished his tenure with a 129-75 (63.2 percent) record with the Wampus Cats. He had coached in Conway for 25 years in all and won six conference championships, as well as played in the 1993 Class AAAAA state title game.

"No one bleeds Wampus Cat Blue any more than Coach Smith," Conway superintendent Greg Murry Said. "Our district and our community appreciate all that he has done to bring pride to our football program. We wish him the very best as he begins a new chapter in his professional career." The Cats have had their rough times in recent seasons, including a 2-8 record this past season. Conway, which has not made the state playoffs since 2006, also went 3-7 in 2007.

Murry said the district will immediately begin the process of finding a replacement for Smith.

Lueders enjoys seeing growth of young athletes

Some coaches are in the profession for all the right reasons.

Barry Lueders is the head coach of Carl Stuart's eighth-grade football team, and he's also an assistant on the high school baseball team. He has been coaching for 24 years and has coached just about every sport during his tenure.

Lueders was my seventh-grade basketball coach when I attended Carl Stuart years ago. He is a player's coach who loves kids. From watching him while I was coming up through the system until now, it appears that he is the same guy.

"That's why I've done it for so long. I just love the kids," he said. "I enjoy watching the guys that I've coach grow up and be men. Then, they'll come back to talk to you and that means a lot to me."

Lueders is a coach that wants to win ball games, but at the same time he wants to get every one into the ball game. And, that serves as confidence builders for those who may not have the most talent in the world. I've noticed that coach Lueders always will go the extra mile for a youngster. He also knows what is going through the minds of those in middle school to high school.

He always had the ability to capture the attention of a player and know how to keep young student-athletes interested in playing the game.

From the jokes to the stories, there was never a dull moment with coach Lueders. After listening to a couple of his post game speeches this fall, he hasn't changed a bit. I even asked a couple of his players how he was.

"Coach Lueders is a very funny man," Carl Stuart's Brian Cox said. "He is full of jokes. He's cool."

As a former player, the coaches that love to win and know how to keep it fun seemed to be the best ones to me. He demands your best and he is a great example of a successful coach.
