This year Kristen Parham's kindergarten class at Sallie Cone Elementary explained how to prepare a Thanksgiving turkey. Here is what her students had to say:
Keyshun: I don't know what the recipe is! You make it go around and around. Shake some stuff on it. I ate some once, but I put hot sauce on it. That's what makes it good! We ate some with pepper and salt. Then put it in the oven and then take it out the oven and it will be done. Then, you will eat it. That's it!
Nacayla: You make it with chicken. Put salt on it. Oh! Some hot sauce too! Then pepper. Then you get the turkey out. You can put him in a pen. But you have to put him in the oven. You cook it for 2 minutes on a lot hot. It's done then and you eat it with hot sauce. It's real good!
Kamiah: You need pepper. Sauce, tomato sauce. Cake sugar. A really big turkey. Pepperoni, I put it on last. I put it all in the oven. And let it cook. That takes about 10 minutes. I take it off the oven and eat it!
Xavier: Um, hmmm well, go to the store. I'll look there for how to make turkey. I'd buy my turkey there. First, salt and then eat it! Oh, yeah, I'd cook it! It cooks for probably about 16 minutes. On kind of hot. You might put some pepper on it too. I forgot last year how we made our turkey. We did cutted it into little pieces and some big pieces. We already said we eat it vegetables too. We eat apples with it too. Oh! And, fruit salad! That's good!
Destiny: You have to put it in a pot. Then you take the bacon out and then cook it and then we put it in the oven. Put some season salt on it. Turn the bacon over. Make sure you cook the bacon good. Put all the turkey and stuff in a bowl. When you cook it you do it for 5 minutes. The oven has to be hot like 7 degrees? Yeah. Then you eat it with your hands!
Derrick: Salt. And, pepper. And put it all in the oven. Bake it. You do it for 20 hours. And, 2000 degrees. That cooks it real good! Pull it out and cut it and slice it. You get plates and then get a fork. And then a knife. Put on a thing around your neck to keep it off you and eat it up!
Jayden: You have to buy him. They have him at Wal-Mart. Bring it home. Put some butter on it. After that he goes in the oven. I play for a while and then get him out of the oven. I like strawberries on him after we get him out of the oven. Then you eat him with an egg. That's it!
Will: Put a hand on the paper and they draw a line and then you cut the lines out wait, one you eat? I don't know how to make one of those! Um, if I did make one I would put ketchup on it. Nothing else. You can cook it for however long it takes. When you get him out of the oven you eat him!
D'Angelo: I would make it with a head, two arms and legs and some eyes and a nose! Um, I would cook one in my stove. I would put some salt and pepper on him. And I would put some sauce, strawberry sauce! Some strawberries. And, some cupcakes too! I would cook him for two days. After I cook him I would eat him! I'd take him to the park too! We would play and swing!
Henry: You get a turkey then bake it. Leave it in the oven 5 minutes and then it's ready! Put sugar and syrup on it. Apple juiceput it on and inside the turkey. Ketchup, put it inside and bake it for 20 hours. Then take it out. Then, eat it!
Bryan: You get the turkey at the store. I would get a big turkey. When you get it home you cook it. You put it in the oven for just a little bit.
Andriana: I think we put it in the oven. Then put sauce on it. I think regular sauce. We can make it like a pumpkin. I've seen people do that before. I don't think you put anything besides sauce on I remember the first time my Momma made it. You put it in the oven after the sauce and then put it in the microwave. One time it was too hot, my Momma did that on Christmas one time. It was funny! You leave it in the oven, like, 10 minutes. Then we eat it!
Hannah: Um, I forgot, but I can try to remember it you get it out of the fridge, you put it in the oven for 30 minutes then you take it out. You put some butter in the middle of it. That's all I remember doing to it. I think that's all. I think my Mom said put salt on it too. That's all. Oh, then you eat it!
Earl: (This student has just moved to the United States from West Africa.) We have rice. Cake. It is sweet. No turkey. You put rice in the bowl. Plain rice. The cake, it is made with sweets. Sugar and chocolate! I like these! You put the cake in the oven. It is for 1 minute maybe. Then I eat the cake!
Taaliyah: You grease it and me and my Momma cook it. We go get it for Thanksgiving. We get it at the store in Conway. We get for all my Thanksgiving people. When you get it home I put stickers on it.
That's all; you don't put anything else on it. You have to put it in the oven for 5 minutes on 1 degree. Take it out and we are done with the turkey. We eat it and then all of my Thanksgiving people are gone and we watch TV.
Ramonie: First you get it from the store. You would bake it and put it in the oven. You take it out the oven and put it in the pot. Then you put it in the refrigerator so it don't get dirty and stuff and you can eat it. You put gravy on it when you eat it.
Cassidy: You have to kill a turkey. I would cook it. You put ketchup on it and mustard and mayonnaise and salt, pepper all this on the meat. I cook it after that. You cook it for 10 minutes and the oven has to be a little hot so that it doesn't burn. Then take it out and eat it! I like to eat it with chicken legs and french fries. Chicken nuggets too! Every time I go to McDonalds with my family I order chicken nuggets and french fries. It's my favorite thing to go with turkey! You can eat fish that's cooked with it. My dad catches a big fish and he cooks it and I eat it all up!
Blaize: Ummmm. If I were a grown up I would get a turkey at the store for my kids. I would heat up the oven real hot and then put the turkey in the pan. Then I would burn it for 10 minutes. Then when I heard it ding I would get it out and get a napkin and a fork and I would take it to the table and I would eat it. It would taste really good!! If my kids ate it all, I would have to go get some more. Then I would throw the bones in the trashcan and clean the dishes. Then after I cleaned the dishes I would go sit down and let my kids watch anything they wanted.
