SPECIAL TO THE LOG CABIN

There is only one day left to purchase tickets to the Vilonia Chamber of Commerce banquet set for 7 p.m. on Feb. 6 at the high school cafeteria.

The count must go to the caterer Thursday, officials said.

“We are down to individual tickets,” said Laura McNeel, executive director, adding that 178 tickets had been sold with 22 left. The deadline was announced Monday night at a VCC board meeting.

Bill Valentine, who served as general manager of the Arkansas Travelers for many years and as a professional baseball umpire for 18 years, will be the guest speaker.

In addition, several awards will be handed out at the banquet including student of the year; city employee of the year; business of the year; youth of the year; school employee of the year; and United Way volunteer of the year.

Drawings for door prizes will also be held throughout the evening, McNeel said. She also talked briefly about a pre-banquet reception that will be held at First Security Bank.

committee reports

• The chamber will now award $500 scholarships to three graduating seniors at Vilonia High School. The board voted to increase the scholarships from two to three as a result of profits from events held this past year including the annual banquet, Spring Business Expo, Vilonia Fest, Bargains Galore and the Fall Business Expo. It was said the net profit from the combined events is more than $4,000.

The chamber scholarships are awarded based on academic achievements, service projects, financial need, community involvement and personal merit of the applicant with a minimum grade point average of 2.5. Also, students must have applied or enrolled in a two- or four-year Arkansas college or vocational technical school. The deadline for applying is March 15. Anyone wanting to apply should talk to Jolene Sanders, school counselor.

• The Vilonia Royalty Pageant will be March 6 at Vilonia Primary School. The entry fee is $40 for one child or $35 per child where there is more than one sibling. It is open to both boys and girls. There are categories open for girls ages newborn to 18 years old. The boys pageant is open to boys newborn to age 7. The deadline for registration is Feb. 19.

• The Vilonia Eagle Fest committee is gearing up for the event to be held the first weekend in June. While things aren’t finalized, there has been mention of adding new features including additional entertainment, a Space Walk and a ping pong drop. It was announced that Eagle Idol, a singing competition, will be held again this year during the festival.
