Peachfest, the City of Guy’s take on a hometown festival, is set for the weekend of July 12 and 13.

This is the second annual Peachfest, after the inaugural festival in 2012, which organizers said was created to showcase the city and what its residents have to offer.

North of Greenbrier, along Highway 25, Guy is home to many acres of orchards.

The town is a destination for people seeking to hand-pick peaches, strawberries and apples.

"The festival is to promote the city and to let the people of Guy shine and showcase what we have to offer … a nice, warm community, a great school and great churches," said organizer Wendy Grimes. "It’s a good small town community that helps each other out."

A turnout of 1,200 to 1,500 people surprised organizers last year, and the festival was successful despite an almost complete lack of peaches.

A historic drought impacted the harvest.

This year, Grimes said peaches are looking good.

Hudson and Cadron Crest orchard’s peaches were turning ripe this week, Grimes said.

There should be plenty of peaches to supply the fruit for the peach cook-off and to sell to festival-goers.

Also planned for the festival are rodeos, a pancake breakfast, races, a poker run, skeet shooting contests, a classic car show, a horseshoe tournament, lawn mower races, a talent contest, mini-tractor pulls, games and live music.

The event ends with a fireworks display.

Fees are associated with contest entries, but the festival admittance is free.
