The boys of Ellen Smith school have organized an athletic club which meets once a week. The following boys are active members: J.W. Reid, Dean Brannon, J.V. Jones, Bobby Barham, James Townsend, A.J. Fulmer, Jerry Williams, Billy Don Reid, J.B. Shoefee, Carlos Starkey, Carroll Gene Blessing, Dickey Stephens, Patton Lea, Dwight Gene Matchett, Wallace Turner, Dickey Linn, James Johnston, Max Prescott and Altoe Crarter.

50 years ago


Chief Petty Officer Joe B. Havens has enlisted in the Navy for six additional years. He took his oath at the U.S. Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Training Center in Port Arthur, Texas. Havens already has spent 20 years in the service. He attended the Navy’s aviation medicine and medical administration schools. He is a son of Mrs. W.E. Havens of Greenbrier and the late Mr. Havens.

Andy White, a bricklayer, worked recently on the steps of First United Methodist Church at Prince and Clifton streets. According to Susan Wilkinson, business manager at First United, White and his son, Mark, were contracted to brick the front steps, which were crumbling, and to brick the access ramp for the handicapped. Andy, co-owner of White Construction of Conway, has been a bricklayer for about 45 years.

The For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology LEGO League team, the Little Green Men, Matthew Scheuter, Daniel Stevenson, Ben Scheuter, Brandon A. Smith, and Brandon M. Smith, reassembled their re-creation of the Martian surface for their league tournament 2003 challenge on Thursday at the Faulkner County Library. The team placed 20th out of 38 teams, qualified for the single elimination round and won the Programming Design award trophy during the tournament at Mountain Home High School on Dec. 13. The homeschoolers demonstrated their robots created for the contest at the library.
