Dug up two feet under the bottom of a ditch on Van Ronkle Street, where a WPA crew is doing a rip-rapping job, the rusted and corroded corporate seal of the Conway Electric and Manufacturing Company was brought to the Log Cabin Democrat office today by M.A. Brown, time-keeper on the job.

Lettering on the face of the seal, that of the company which provided Conway with its first electric lights, was easily readable, although the instrument had lain buried for about 40 years.

LeRoy Pennington of the Division of Guidance Services, state Department of Education, will be the speaker Tuesday at a meeting of the Conway Lions Club at Tommy’s Restaurant.

Pennington is expected to discuss matters pertaining to the operation of guidance programs in Arkansas public schools.

Work crews from Union Pacific Railroad and the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department were busy yesterday at Bruce and Harkrider streets removing railroad spur tracks. Once the tracks were removed, the area was covered with temporary pavement that will be replaced later with a more permanent pavement, according to Lawrence Fletcher, district engineer at the highway department.

Hendrix College faculty will go back to school better equipped to challenge their students, thanks to a $504,000 gift from Wayne and Betty Pyeatt of Memphis

The gift, announced at a faculty luncheon Monday, will support faculty development.

Wayne Pyeatt’s relationship with Hendrix goes back more than 80 years, when his father attended Hendrix in 1916 but had to leave when World War I broke out.
