Vilonia Middle School Principal Cathy Riggins has been named as assistant superintendent for the school district.
The announcement was made Thursday night at a special board of education meeting where the subject of personnel was the only item on the agenda. Superintendent Dr. Frank Mitchell and the board met in executive session for about two hours before making the announcement. Following, Riggins shook hands with the board members and several audience members.
"I’m so appreciative to have this opportunity," Riggins said. "I’m committed to this district."
Self-described as an ultimate Eagle, Riggins has worked for the school district for the past 22 years, 15 years as a teacher and seven years as a principal. As principal at VMS, she has led the school to a Diamond School rating announced in February 2013. Also in 2012, she achieved the Master Principal status. At the time, she was one of 21 principals statewide to earn the distinction. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway and she is a specialist in education leadership from Arkansas State University.
Riggins will replace Gary Lambert who is retiring.
In other business, Theresa Alcon was named as the director of transportation and Danny Harmon will serve as assistant director. Tim Goers was named as physical education and basketball coach at Vilonia High School. Kirk McDonald was named as the physical education and junior girls’ basketball coach. Amy Goers will teach math at the Middle School. Calvin Robinette will have his position changed from part-time physical education to full time adding the job of environmental science teacher. Brittany Wiedower will serve as ICM for third grade at the Elementary School. Elizabeth Nordenreen and Connie Krebehl will serve as custodians. Also, Jordan Bullock, Jamie Johnson and Angela Payne will begin working at Eagles Landing.
