The Conway Fire Department responded to a residential fire shortly before 7:30 a.m. Thursday. While there were no human victims, seven pets died.

Battalion Chief Larry Davis said CFD responded to a house fire at Apartment A at 806 Fifth St. at 7:23 a.m. and had the fire controlled within 20 minutes.

Damages to the adjacent apartment included heat, smoke and water damage.

No one was injured during the fire and the cause was still under investigation by press time Friday.

Davis said a mother cat and one of her newborn kittens died in the fire but that the fire department was able to rescue five of the kittens.

Cpt. Richard Powell said the five kittens received oxygen treatment, which raises the oxygen concentration in the body to treat toxic gases from smoke inhalation.

The kittens were taken to the Conway Animal Welfare Unit from there.

The Log Cabin Democrat called the animal welfare unit a few after hours after the fire was put out and learned the kittens were euthanized.
