Mrs. Jack Dempsy, the former Hannah Williams, stage singer, became the mother of a 7½-pound daughter. The baby was born at Polyclinic Hospital in New York. The baby’s father was the former heavyweight champion of the world.

Eighteen members of the Central College Club met at the home of Mrs. Florence Traylor, with Mrs. John Phelps and Mrs. J.D. Dunaway as assistant hostesses. After a short business session a comic program was given in which members impersonated a few celebrities. Music was rendered on the guitar and French harps by Mrs. Fred Bailey and Mrs. L.B. Pence, who were dressed in costumes of the early days. Sherbet cups were served during the social hour.

(1959)

The Conway Pilot Club held its annual picnic at Beaverfork Lake. Following the supper the members and guests were taken for boat rides by Mr. and Mrs. John Mode Gentry. The committee in charge of the picnic included Mrs. Elmer Franabarger, Mrs. Orene Cochran, Mrs. Gentry, Mrs. Noble Smith and Mrs. Dewey Wofford. 

Coach and Mrs. Ivan H. Grove returned from a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Grove in Arkansas City. The elder Mr. Grove celebrated his 92nd birthday during the visit.

(1984)

New officers for the Faulkner County Ministerial Alliance were installed at Holiday Inn. The Rev. Pierce Wilcox was named president. The Rev. Ken Brown was vice president and the Rev. Jim Beal was named secretary-treasurer.

Palmetto Chapter No. 47, Order of Easter Star, held a meeting at the Masonic Hall. Mrs. Jewell Harral, worthy matron and W.E. Pennington, worthy patron, presided. Serving as substitute officers were Mrs. Ella Banister, Mrs. Eunice McHenry, Mrs. Shirley Henderson, Mrs. Ovie Stapleton, Mrs. Irene Pennington and Mrs. Hettie Colvard. Mrs. Ida Wofford, chapter mom, would be honored at the next stated meeting.

Conway Morning Optimist won the 18-and-under championship in the Youth Softball Association of Conway. The team was the 16-and-under champion last year. Team members were Jessica Baker, Allison Avra, Brooke Bussey, Hope Dunseath, Laura Garner, Amber Schroder, Jenifer Baker, Jamie Brock, Samantha Hayes, Sarah Dunseath and Ellen Wiles. Coaches were Greg Dunseath and David Avra.

Rhonda Kay Wood of Conway scored the highest of those who took the general bar examination in July according to the Arkansas State Board of Law Examiners. Others passing including Leslie Cherie Crawford, James David Hicks and Matthew Richard House.
