Miss Geraldine Ethridge was the winner of the Hollywood Tour Popularity Contest sponsored by Malco Theatres Inc. at the Conway Theatre. Miss Ethridge received 166,700 votes in the contest to win a 10-day trip to Los Angeles, Calif. Second place prize winner was Miss Ruth Berry, with 142,305 votes. Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Krieger Bishop was third. Miss Berry was awarded a year’s free pass to the theatre. Mrs. Bishop got a six-month pass. 


50 years ago 


Nancy Rook celebrated her 6th birthday at her home. A birthday cake decorated with light blue icing and centered with pink roses was served with ice cream and punch. Attending were Janie Johnson, Jan Tyler, Stevie Lachowsky, Mary Alice Owen, Lee Gregory, Nina Ruth Rouche, Frances Alexander, Clay Cooper, Jackie Lou Brown, Becky Moore, Libby Ann Williams, "Buggsey" Williams, Marsha Maxey and Bob Rook.

Miss Sarah Moore Robinson resigned from the Hendrix College music faculty to join the faculty of Florida State University. Mrs. Jacqueline Mulacek will return to full-time duties in September. 


25 years ago


Four couples celebrated their wedding anniversaries at a party at Faulkner Nursing Center. The four couples had been married a total of 251 years. Earnest and Tennie Kenny had been married 71 years; Lonnie and Betty Fore had been married 46 years. Lula and Alvin Fowler had been married 68 years. Julia and Enoch Duncan had been married 66 years. The center planned to have more celebrations like this one regularly. Refreshments were enjoyed by the couples and their friends. 

Food 4 Less, a discount supermarket, planned to open for business this weekend at Harkrider and Sixth streets. The Conway Food 4 Less store was the 19th in a statewide expansion of the chain, owned by the Phillips Co. of Bentonville.

Ashley Humbert was selected as a finalist in the 1999 Pre-Teen Arkansas Scholarship and Recognition Program. Pre-Teen Arkansas was a scholarship and recognition event for girls age 7 to 12 based on their school academic records and partners in outside activities. 

The Titans, an A Buddy League team from Vilonia, finished in District 6 league and tournament play. Team members were Dillon Hantz, Clayton Clements, Tyler Brown, Casey Ball, Jared Ticer, Dustin Hawkins, T.J. Benedetti, Justin Bryant, Alex Crawford and Marcus Brewer. Coaches were Wilbur Crawford, Mike Clements and Mark Brewer.
