Hazel Maxine Clendenin Payne, 91, of Damascus, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at her home.
Born Feb. 23, 1918, in Guy, she was a daughter of the late Virgil and Louella (Hooper) Clendenin. She dedicated her life to caring for friends, family and all of God’s creation. She loved working outside in her flower gardens, always with children, grandchildren and cats afoot.
She was a lifelong member of Pine Mountain General Baptist Church, teaching Sunday school, sewing quilts to sell and helping in any way she could. She was a member of Damascus Chapter 515 of the Order of the Eastern Star for 60 years. She also worked as a home health aide well into her 70s.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Raymond Payne; sisters, Lyddie and Eulla Mae Clendenin; and brothers, Thurman, Everett, Arville and Henry Clendenin.
She is survived by four daughters, Verda Holland and husband Claude of Oklahoma City, Rayma Sue Fureigh of Conway, Maxine Stell and husband, Ray, of Greenbrier and Kathy McCall of Damascus; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Special thanks go to Van Buren County Hospice and Marilee Maliszewski, who helped Hazel and the family through this difficult time.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Pine Mountain General Baptist Church with the Rev. Gearl Payne officiating. The Rev. Fairel Pierce will read the eulogy. Interment will follow at Pine Mountain Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Barry Parks, Benjie Fureigh, Andy Sutterfield, Dustin Sutterfield, Brad Fureigh and Ben Fureigh. Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Howard, Travis Holland, Mickey McCall, Jackson Howard, Tyler Holland, Bryce Holland and Alex Robey.
