Saltillo Heights Baptist Church of Conway held a special ordination service Aug. 16 to ordain new pastor Jimmy Thomas as a minister of God’s word in the Southern Baptist Convention.

Presiding over the service was Jake McCandless, pastor of Mount Vernon Baptist Church; Tim Nolan, associate pastor of Oak Bowery Baptist Church, Conway; and Bro. Larry White, Associational Missionary for the Faulkner County Southern Baptist Association, Conway.

Special music was provided by Michelle Phillips and Lisa Roberson, both of Mount Vernon.

Thomas, ordained as a deacon by Mount Vernon Baptist Church in 1996, surrendered to the call of ministry in 2001, and was licensed by Yankton Baptist Church, Yankton, S.D., where he was a member at that time.

Thomas and his family, all native to Faulkner County, returned in 2004 after five years in the Midwest, and resumed service at Mount Vernon Baptist Church until Nov. 9, 2008, when he was asked to preach at Saltillo Heights Baptist Church while the church searched for a pastor.  On Dec. 14, the church voted to appoint Thomas as their interim pastor.  He continued in this role until May 24 when the church voted unanimously to call Thomas as full-time pastor.

Thomas’ ministry style and personality spans the ages appealing to the youngest of members to the oldest, and is instilling a new appreciation for God’s word by teaching different books of the Bible verse by verse during evening services.

Thomas’ service history includes discipleship training for adults, men’s ministries and fellowships, children and youth ministry through teaching Sunday school, AWANA, TeamKid, VBS, church camp, retreats and other activities focused on children and youth.

Thomas and his wife, Rita, have been married for 22 years. They have a 13-year-old daughter, Marinna.

The service was immediately followed by a celebration reception in the activities center for church members and a host of guests consisting of family and friends.
