Joseph Clemmer "Joe" Robbins was born Jan. 15, 1936, in Conway, and died Aug. 23, 2009, after a brief illness, in Petoskey, Mich. 

He is survived by a sister, Dr. Ann Poindexter; and a longtime friend, Andre Aerne. His parents were Joseph and Iva May Robbins of Conway, who preceded him in death. He graduated from Hendrix College, attended Chicago Art Institute and received a master’s degree from Indiana University. He taught voice at Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in Virginia and Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo. He was a professor of voice and opera at Georgia Southern University for 25 years, eventually creating his own opera company. He also had a significant career in voice as a leading bass for opera companies in New York and St. Louis. Joe was a lifelong supporter of the arts, antique collector and animal lover.
