For a few hours Saturday afternoon, women in Central Arkansas were treated to free screenings and exams as well as door prizes and shopping.
The Great Escape benefitting The Women’s Shelter of Central Arkansas hosted more than 900 women for a day of relaxation, renewal and recharge.
Ladies visited a number of vendors and received screenings for sun-damaged skin, fibromyalgia, cholesterol and glucose and blood pressure. For an additional charge, ladies could get a haircut, facial, makeover or massage. All proceeds went to the shelter.
Jade Spotts with Hello Gorgeous said the salon’s staff had worked with about 60-70 people doing either a massage, eyebrow wax or haircut.
"We have done about 35 haircuts," Spotts said.
Staci Smith, also with Hello Gorgeous, said the staff had worked together so they could offer their services to people while also seeing vendor’s booths.
In addition to regular massages, Sarah Thomas offered hand and arm massages. Lucy Green came to the Escape just for a hand massage.
"It is the only thing I have done. I had another appointment so I came late," Green said.
Whitney Harrison of Natural State Chiropractic said the office had almost filled its appointment book based on the number of free screenings given.
"We have seen over 40 people. We are running out of questionnaires," Harrison said.
Jamie Boyd, president of the board of directors and chairperson of the event, said about 920 people attended the event, more than twice the amount from 2008.
"We had a steady flow and are definitely pleased," she said. "The weather was good, the attendance was good and the vendors are happy."
Next year marks the event’s 15th year. Boyd said she plans for the anniversary event to have much more.
