For many basketball teams in Faulkner County, the second part of the season begins this week.

Five schools under the Log Cabin Democrat’s coverage area, Guy-Perkins, Mayflower, Mount Vernon-Enola, St. Joseph and Conway Christian are scheduled to play in their respective district tournaments.

The Guy-Perkins girls, Mount Vernon-Enola boys and Conway Christian girls all won regular season conference titles, earning No. 1 seeds for their district tournaments. The St. Joseph girls, Thunderbirds, Lady Warhawks, Mayflower girls, and Bulldogs all finished in second place in their conferences during the regular season.

The Guy-Perkins girls are scheduled to play at 7 pm on Thursday against the St. Joseph Pine Bluff/LISA Academy winner. The Thunderbirds will play at 5:45, against the winner of St. Joseph Pine Bluff/LISA Academy winner. The tournament site for district rival Guy-Perkins is at South Side Bee Branch.

“I think our girls are right where they need to be right now,” Guy-Perkins coach John Hutchcraft said. “We’ve been playing good and we haven’t had any injuries. I’m really satisfied with how they’ve been playing. Our boys are similar. They are also playing well going into the district tournament. Both of our teams lost a player at the semester because of academics but we’ve been able to adapt.”

Hutchcraft’s daughter, Conway Christian coach Ashley Nance, also had a successful season in conference play. Nance’s Lady Eagles are 20-4 on the season, overall, in their second year as a member of the Arkansas Activities Association.

“Winning our conference was a great accomplishment,” Nance said. “That was one of the goals that we set before the season. Another one was to win 20 games and we were able to do that. It just say a lot for the type of team that we have. It’s taken a lot of hard work to this point.

“We just have to keep the mindset of taking it one game at time. That has kind of been our motto all year. We can’t look forward to making it to the finals or regionals. We you overlook somebody, then that’s when you get beat.”
