BEE BRANCH — Guy-Perkins defeated their conference rivals once again, only this time was for the Class A Region III championship.

The Thunderbirds were led by Denell Henderson’s 13 points. Also for Guy-Perkins, Brian Hooten and Alex Davis scored 12 and 11, respectively.

"This was another unbelieveable Mount Vernon vs. Guy-Perkins game," Thunderbirds coach John Hutchcraft said.

A late block by Alex Davis helped seal the deal. That was also big since Guy-Perkins’ big man, Henderson, fouled out with five minutes left.

"I was real proud of the boys for stepping up," Hutchcraft said. "We were very fortunate to win this game."

With the win, the Thunderbirds will take on Nemo Vista at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Class 1A state tournament at Hillcrest.

The Warhawks were led by Colton Sherrill’s 24 points. Chris Hamilton pitched in 13 points.

"We should have made a few more free throws. This probably was our poorest free throw shooting night of the season," Mount Vernon-Enola coach coach Justin Rodgers said. "My hat goes off to Guy-Perkins. It was a battle. It’s always a battle.

"Now, we have Mammouth Springs coming up in the state tournament, and we have our hands full. They’re a well-coached team. If we can get past them then we have the Bradley Bears ... And they are very good."

The Guy-Perkins Lady Thunderbirds rallied for a 43-37 victory over Poyen in the Class A Region 3 championship game.

Lainie Lagassee, who had a team-high 19 points, hit a pair of clutch 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Christian Ward nailed a couple of free throws to seal the deal.

Brooklyn Harwick scored 13 points in Guy-Perkins’ title win.

The Lady Thunderbirds will take on Sacred Heart at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Class 1A state tournament in Hillcrest.
