The girls gymnastic team from Sonshine Academy, Level 4-7, recorded several high finishes last weekend at the Pepsi Challenge in Hot Springs.
Sonshine gymnasts garnered a third-place finish in the Level 6 team competition, three all-around titles and 14 individual event titles. The Level 6 team was composed of Haley Claire Mathis (9 years), Taylor Joe (10), and Anna Barnard (15).
All-around winners were Abby Carter (Level 4, 10) scoring a 35.35, Keely Crass (Level 5, 10) who scored a 34.975 and Holly Hambuchen (Level 7, 18 ) scoring a 35.00.
Individual event winners at Level 4 were Abigail Robinson (8) and Anna Hart (12) on beam, and Julia King (8), Abby Carter and Tori Dinges (12) on floor.
In the Level 5 individual event competition, Crass won bars and beam, and Rachel Gaffney (13) won beam. At Level 6, Taylor Joe placed first on vault and floor. At Level 7, Holly Hambuchen won vault, bars, beam, and floor.
Other event highlights included Hambuchen competing a giant swing in her uneven bar routine for the first time in competition, scoring a Level 7 career high 9.20.
Twenty-seven top-three placements rounded out the competition highlights as follows:
Level 4 — Julia King, 3rd vault; Abigail Robinson, 3rd all-around; Cyndi Zepeda (8), 3rd beam; Emily Lively (9), 3rd beam; Abby Carter, third, bars and second beam; Lizzie Spivey (10 ), 2nd floor; Tori Dinges, 2nd beam; Bethany Stubbs (12 yrs), 3rd vault and all-around; Whitley Dillon (13 yrs), 2nd Bars and All-around.
Level 5 — Abigail Robnett (8), 2nd bars; Keely Crass, 3rd vault and floor; Paige Johnson (12), 3rd beam; Rachel Gaffney, 3rd vault and floor, 2nd bars and all-around.
Level 6 — Haley Claire Mathis, 2nd floor; Taylor Joe – 2nd bars and all-around; Anna Barnard – 3rd vault and all-around, and 2nd bars and beam.
