A benefit is scheduled Thursday at Zion Temple Church of God in Christ for the family of Bob Courtway Middle School student Garic Maurice Grady, a victim of drowning.
Grady, 14, died Monday at Children’s Hospital after he was pulled from the swimming pool at Centennial Valley Apartments in Conway.
Karen Lasker, Grady’s principal, said counselors have been present at the school this week to aid grieving students.
"We had an emergency faculty meeting, where I told them that (Grady) had passed. District counselors came in to the building and helped students as they came in that day. They were obviously distraught."
Lasker described Grady as a well-liked, athletic student who maintained "awesome" grades. "He was a wonderful kid all around," she said. "One of our prized students here at Bob Courtway."
A Facebook group, ‘In Memory of Garic Grady,’ created by fellow students has continuously been updated with photos and comments by some of its 360 members.
"He had just won our athletic award on Thursday. He was an outstanding seventh-grader, an outstanding artist," said Lasker.
Grady’s teachers, faculty and staff at Bob Courtway will be present at Thursday’s benefit to provide Grady’s family with a monetary gift, a portrait of Grady, his jerseys and football.
Zion Temple Church is located at 1272 Sutton Street in Conway.
The benefit begins at 7 p.m.
