Jody Gatchell of A&J Collision Repair in Conway will have the privilege of handing over keys to a used car to a deserving family at 11:30 a.m. today.

The effort is part of Wheels to Prosper, a movement Gatchell helped begin five years ago that now involves automotive shop owners across the country.

"In our society, it’s mandatory that a family have a car. Because we have little public transportation, those without cars can’t get to work and provide for their families," Gatchell said.

At the same time all across the country on Saturday, deserving families will receive keys to cars donated by members of Wheels to Prosper.

Three Faulkner County families were nominated to receive the car this year, and a local committee made the selection. The runners-up will receive various gift certificates donated by the community, Gatchell said.

The recipients can’t nominate themselves; others must see they are worthy of receiving the car.

A nomination form is available on the WheelstoProsperArkansas Facebook page.

"It takes a team of people to make this project work," Gatchell said.

This year’s Conway car came from Economy Motors. It had a blown motor, so Gatchell was able to get it at a good price. An engine came from Little Rock and Mason’s Garage did the repair work.

This year’s recipient is not only working two jobs, but he also volunteers at New Life Church and at the Boys and Girls Club.

"We’re happy to help him help others," Gatchell said.

The key ceremony with refreshments will be at 11:30 Saturday at A&J Collision Repair, 1215 Thomas G. Wilson Dr. in Conway.
