NEW YORK (AP) — The black and white striped figure running down the street on New York City’s Staten Island wasn’t an escaped convict. It was a zebra.
The Staten Island Advance reports that the zebra and a miniature horse were spotted trotting through a shopping center parking lot Wednesday morning.
Zachary Osher, owner of Metropolitan Drape & Blind, saw the runaway equines and shared his video with the Advance.
Osher said the animals ran down a street and narrowly escaped being hit by a car. He said two men in dark suits ran after the beasts with lassoes.
A police spokesman says the animals were corralled and brought back to their owner later Tuesday. The New York Times reports that they belong to a petting zoo.
