OZARK (AP) — The wife of Franklin County Judge Joe Powell has been named to replace Powell when he resigns next week.

The county Quorum Court voted 8-1 Thursday to appoint Janet Powell to fill the remainder of her husband’s term — which expires at the end of 2014.

Joe Powell has served as the county’s chief executive for 35 years and was unopposed in his last re-election race. He announced his resignation in a Feb. 1 letter that cites requirements of the Arkansas Public Employee Retirement System’s Deferred Retirement Option Plan.

Powell says he entered the program in 2006 and it requires him to leave the system within seven years.

Janet Powell told northwest Arkansas newspapers that she sought the post because she believes county employees do not want a change.
