Miss Laurice Echlin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Creed L. Echlin, received notice today that she had won first prize in a national dress design contest sponsored by a dress manufacturing concern. Only three prizes were awarded and the model designed and submitted by Miss Echlin received the highest award.

Diane Ott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Ott and a senior at Conway High School, was one of 21 Arkansas high school students recently named to receive National Merit Scholarships. Miss Ott’s is valued at approximately $900. Miss Ott plans to attend Hendrix College. She will graduate with honor from high school next week.

Vesta Harrison, poppy chairman for the Theodore Campbell Post 16 of the American Legion and its auxiliary, reached to adjust a poppy attached to the tie of Bill Ledbetter of Conway during a poppy distribution Friday at Safeway Stores Inc. Mrs. Harrison and other auxiliary members distributed the handmade poppies throughout Conway to collect donations to benefit the McClellan Veterans hospitals at Little Rock and North Little Rock.

Mike Cumnock, CEO of the Arkansas Sheriffs’ Youth Ranches, presented Faulkner County Sheriff Marty Montgomery a grouping of photos commemorating his three years of service as president of the organization’s board during the noon meeting of the Rotary Club on Thursday. According to Cumnock, during Montgomery’s term, the organization expanded from two to four locations and is now housing more than 400 youngsters. The organization is a therapeutic resident program serving homeless, abused, neglected or abandoned children.
