Deputy County Tax Assessor Ed Middleton has been granted a leave by Assessor Bert M. Tilley to make the campaign for the Democratic nomination to the office. Mr. Tilley, who will retire from the office at the close of the year, said Mr. Middleton would return to work when the primary is over.

Raymond (Buddy) Bright, Jr., 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bright, caught a 6 1/4-pound bass yesterday at Lake Conway. The youngster was fishing with his father from Scrap Lawrence’s Landing. The fish was caught on a Burkes’ Twin Tail while trolling.

Rhonda Boucher, a first-grade teacher at Sallie Cone Elementary School, read "The Hungry Stranger" to a group of students yesterday during the summer reading program at the school. Teachers will read stories to students from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays in the school media center. Students in kindergarten though fifth grade are invited to attend. The program will conclude Wednesday, Aug. 17.

The Hendrix College class of 2003 celebrated the 199th commencement at the college May 17.

Hendrix conferred bachelor of arts degrees on 219 seniors and master of arts degrees upon seven graduate students.
