UCA 23rd in TSN poll

The University of Central Arkansas dropped from 21st to 23rd in the latest poll of NCAA FCS schools by The Sports Network.

North Dakota State remained No. 1 while Eastern Illinois moved to second. McNeese State moved to No. 4 after a victory over Sam Houston State, which fell to seventh.

Conway fourth in AP poll

Conway High’s 37-7 victory Friday over Fort Smith Southside moved the Wampus Cats to fourth in the AP poll of high schools.

Bentonville remained No. 1 and Cabot No. 2. Fayetteville is No. 3 despite having as many first-place votes as Bentonville. Cabot secured the second spot on overall points.

Hendrix’s Shannon and Smith receive honors

Hendrix College freshman safety Caleb Shannon was named the Southern Athletic Association Football Defensive Player of the Week and freshman punter Spencer Smith was the Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Shannon recorded two interceptions, eight tackles and a pair of pass breakups in Saturday’s 30-17 win over Berry. Shannon, from The Woodlands, Texas, returned his first interception 13 yards to the Vikings’ 9, setting up the Warriors’ first touchdown of the game in the second quarter. His second interception came in the end zone during the third quarter, leading to a Hendrix touchdown on their ensuing drive.

Smith punted seven times for a 41.3 yard average and had five punts inside the 20 in the Warriors’ 30-17 win over Berry. The Houston, Texas native’s longest punt was 59 yards to the Vikings’ 18 that eventually resulted in a safety for the Hendrix defense. Smith also had three catches for 15 yards as a receiver.

Hendrix’s Stockdale Player of Week

Hendrix College freshman middle blocker Samantha Stockdale has been named the Southern Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week for volleyball.

She led the Warriors with a .463 hitting percentage and had 2.10 killer per set as Hendrix went 2-1 in conference play.
The Salem, Ore., native had four kills, three aces and five blocks in Wednesday’s sweep against Rhodes. In a four-set loss at Berry on Saturday, Stockdale hit .600 with six kills and no errors and had two blocks. She hit .500 with 11 kills and just one error in Sunday’s sweep at Oglethorpe. For the week, Stockdale recorded 21 kills and made just two errors. She also had 10 digs and eight blocks.

CCS players advance in state tennis tourney

JONESBORO — Conway Christian advanced a singles player and a doubles team to Tuesday’s semifinals in the Class 2A state tennis tournament Monday.

Mary-Morgan Ellis and Whitley Wooten won their first-round match, 6-1 6-0, and their quarterfinal match, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the semifinals.

Macey Vaught won her first-round match, 6-0, 6-0, and the quarterfinal, 6-3, 6-1.

Ross Minner won his first match, 6-3, 6-0, but was defeated in the quarterfinals, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.
