Conway firemen reported today approximately 500 emptied whiskey bottles were found on a vacant lot burned off yesterday at the corner of Duncan and Ash streets. The bottles were broken by the heat as a match was applied to the dried grass and weeds.

Members of the Conway Optimist Club displayed the Governor’s Award Banner recently presented the club at a District 34 meeting in Hot Springs. The award signified the club’s efforts in increasing membership, attendance, life members, new club building and boys work. These five things were stressed at the meeting. Holding the banner are Bob Swartz, secretary-treasurer of the club; Al Hiegel, vice president; William J. Dean, president; and J.S. Mattingly Jr., chairman of the boys work committee and achievement awards committee chairman of District 34.

Mary Aleese Schreiber, executive director of Counseling Associates Inc., recently received an Exceptional Accomplishment Award at the 40th annual Arkansas Community Development Program Awards Ceremony in Little Rock. She was nominated for her work with HAVEN (Help for Abuse Victims in Emergency Need). The shelter has served 127 clients since August 1986.

Greenbrier defeated Huntsville but fell to Siloam Springs at the AAAA-West Volleyball District Tournament on Saturday.
Against Huntsville, Greenbrier (12-11) won 25-9, 25-11 and 25-7. Melissa Johns, Kelli Zimmerman all served 100 percent for the Lady Panthers. Melissa Allen and Amy Allen each had six aces while Saray Hill and Sarah Hocott finished with six and five kills each. Ashlea Collins and Zimmerman each finished with four kills.
In a second-round match, Siloam Springs defeated Greenbrier 25-20, 25-11 and 25-17. Hill finished with five kills and five blocks. Zimmerman finished with three kills and four digs.
