News has just been received here that F.M. Bollen, superintendent of the Vilonia Public Schools, has been named an "outstanding instructor" in vocational agriculture by R.B. Smith, state supervisor of vocational education.

Mr. Bollen attributed the honor to the cooperative efforts of the Vilonia Future Farmers of America and especially the educational achievements of one of its members, Conley Pate, who scored 397 points out of a possible 400.

50 years ago


The first major dramatic production of the fall season will be presented at Hendrix College Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. The Hendrix Players under the direction of Mrs. Ella Myrl Shanks, will introduce "The Miracle Worker." The play begins each night at 8 o’clock.

In a cast dominated by sophomores, Susan McMurry is the teacher Miss Sullivan and Missey Williams plays Helen.

Seventy-one St. Joseph School students in kindergarten through ninth grade recently raised $1,939.92 for St. Jude children’s Research Hospital in Memphis through participation in a "math-a-thon."

Each student worked approximately 200 problems and collected money based on the amount pledged for each problem.

Catherine Kresge raised $158.25; Jon Gray, $133.25; Elizabeth Glover, $118.80; and Erika Magie, $104. These were the to fund-raisers. At least $25 each was raised by 31 other students.

Surrounded by her parents Marty and Lisa Knight and her coach Cindy Stage, Vilonia High School track standout Brittany Knight signed a letter of intent with Arkansas Tech University. During her career, she finished in the top 10 at the state cross country meet all four years that she competed and finished one place out of all-state both her freshman and sophomore years and is the state record holder in the indoor 800 meter run. She was named to the Arkansas All-Star team in 2002, competing against Oklahoma and never lost an 800-meter race in AAU competition in the state of Arkansas and was a five-time champion in her age division.
