M.J. Lippman, director of the Hendrix College band, left today for Chicago, where he conduct the annual Christmas concert of the Loyola University band. Mr. Lippman directed the Loyola band before coming to Hendrix.

Mr. Lippman was accompanied by Mrs. Lippman and by Miss Martha Barry, Hendrix art instructor, who went with them as far as South Bend, Ind. Miss Barry will spend the holidays in Indiana and in Chicago.

Miss Connie Smith, Miss City Beautiful of Conway, turned on the Christmas tree lights at the courthouse lawn in a ceremony Sunday.

The annual lighting is sponsored by the City Beautiful committee of the Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. William J. Thomas is chairman.

The Rev. William West, pastor of Second Baptist Church, was the speaker. The choir of the First Church of the Nazarene furnished music. The Conway Corp., erected the tree and decorated it.

Jay Lewis Southerland, 15, a ninth grade student at Conway Junior High School, was recognized for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout during ceremonies Dec. 10 at First Baptist Church in England (Lonoke County). Mr. Southerland, son of Joe and Joan Southerland and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gresham and Ellen Southerland of Conway, was active in Troop No. 349 in England seven years.

Kevin Watson, vice president of the Faulkner County Home Builders’ Association, presented a check for $1,000 to Phyliss Fry, executive director of Community Action Program for Central Arkansas. The donation will be utilized to purchase food for the upcoming holiday distribution, set for Friday. Also on hand for the presentation was Robin Longing, executive director of the FCHBA.
