Lynne Thompson, 17, president of Delta Beta Sigma sorority, made a trial run at bread selling for the March of Dimes preparation for Sunday’s sale. Mrs. Joe Castleberry returned a sizeable donation to the drive for a loaf. Members of the DBS and Girl Scout Troop 312 will begin selling at 3 p.m. No price is put on the merchandise, allowing donations of any amount, John Hale, co-chairman of the sale, said today. J.M. (Son) Milam is the other chairman.

The Greenbrier senior girls clinched at least a tie for the 5AA-North conference championship last night with a convincing 57-34 win over Vilonia.

Even though the Panthers only have clinched a tie, Greenbrier coach Tommy Reed said the team has automatically gained a berth in the district finals and regional tournament by the league’s tie-breaking formula.

Deena Culberson of Mayflower was presented the 2004 Community Spirit Award by the Mayflower Chamber of Commerce.

Each year the award is given to a person who has made significant contributions to the community.

Culberson has lived in Mayflower for 24 years. She and her husband, David, own a soybean and rice farm and a greenhouse wholesale business. She became involved with Mayflower schools 15 years ago in the Parent-Teacher Organization and served as president two years, after she left a job in Little Rock to stay home with her two sons, David 20, and Will, 17, and work in the greenhouse.
