Vilonia girls shut down Huntsville

The Vilonia Lady Eagles turned what coach Alvin Riley described as their best defensive effort of the season Friday night in romping past Huntsville, 49-23, to build a two-game lead atop 5A-West.

After Huntsville rallied for a 10-4 deficit to tie the game at 14 in the second quarter, Vilonia (21-3, 9-1) went on a 23-3 run to take a 37-17 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Audrey Moran led the scoring on a perfect shooting night from the field going six for six from two-point range and two for two from 3-point range and adding two free throws to finish with 20 points and three assists. McKenzie Morris added 10 points, while Sydney Wader had seven points and led in rebounds with five and blocks with four. Hannah Schnebelen chipped in nine points. This victory gives Vilonia a 2 game lead in the conference with a record of 9-1 and 21-3 overall.

Vilonia will host Clarksville on Tuesday night.

St. Joseph hosts district tourney

Teams in 2A-4 will gather at St. Joseph’s Family Activity Center for the district basketball tournament beginning Tuesday.

St. Joseph’s boys and girls are top-seeded in each division. The boys will play the Western-Yell County-Quitman winner at 7 p.m. Friday. The boys will play the Bigelow-Quitman winner at 8:15 p.m. Friday. The championship games are at 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Saturday.

Conway Christian’s girls are the No. 3 seed and will take on Bigelow at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The winner will play Hector at 4;30 p.m. Friday. The CCS boys, the No. 6 seed, will play Western Yell County at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. The winner will take on Hector at 5:45 p.m. Friday.

Conway AD to speak at Sports Club

Steve Daniels, the athletic director for Conway Public Schools, will be the guest speaker at Monday’s monthly luncheon of the Arkansas Sports Club.

The luncheon, free to all interested, will begin at 11:30 a.m. at The Golden Corral. The program will begin at 12:05 p.m.
