The oft-recurring question as to whether the sale of soft drinks and cigars will be permitted on Sunday in Conway was brought before the city council last night, when Judge E. M. Merriman addressed that body regarding a fine assessed by Mayor J. C. Dawson against the proprietors of Heiliger’ Palm Garden. Judge Merriman insisted that if the Sabbath laws were to be strictly enforced, restaurants should not be permitted to sell soft drinks and cigars and that the sale of gasoline and other commodities on Sunday should be prohibited.

The Faulkner county health unit, threatened with discontinuance on October 1 by exhaustion of county funds, will remain in service at least until January 1 next, it was announced today following action of the Chamber of Commerce board of directors in accepting sponsorship of raising the necessary $450 or its maintenance and guaranteeing this fund to the unit.

A state Highway Department grading crew is scheduled to move Monday to Highway 285 at Wooster to begin the final phase of shoulder work and grading on 2.35 miles of road from Wooster to Shay Grove in north Faulkner County. Work started more than a year ago on this project, but was halted last winter with little progress through the summer, due to difficulties with rights-of-way, fences and utility lines. Total cost of the project will be approximately $75,000.

Several local businesses provided fashion clothing and contributed door prizes for a recently held luncheon and annual style show by the Conway Newcomers’ Club. The show was coordinated by Sue Faggetti and Diane Bunyan and had the theme of "Pretty Woman."

Vilonia’s tennis teams split tied Greenwood and beat Greenbrier earlier this week. In the 4-4 split with Greenwood, Vilonia got wins from Keenan Stiles in boys singles, Brad Norris and Evan Buerer and Jordan Riley and Robert Payne in boys doubles and Rachael Oakley and Katy-jo Whisnant in girls doubles. In the 7-1 win over Greenbrier, Vilonia wins were by Stiles in boy’s singles, Norris and Buerer and Riley and Payne in boys doubles, Tara Coghlan and Hannah Fulmer in girls singles and Oakley-Whisnant and Paige Cline-Katie Verner in girls doubles.
