Zach Cates announced he will run for Justice of the Peace, District 13, on the Faulkner County Quorum Court.
Cates is running on the Republican ticket.
He describes himself as a fiscal conservative, who believes the government should be held accountable for how they serve the people.
Cates is a purchasing agent at Rausch Coleman Homes, where he manages budgets and material costs.
Cates was born in Conway, where he graduated from Conway High School.
He went to Northeast Texas Community College and was drafted in the third round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft by the San Diego Padres.
Cates completed his baseball career in the Chicago Cubs organization.
While playing professional baseball, Cates earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Phoenix.
Zach, his wife Kelly, and their 4-month-old daughter, Sutton, are active members of the Conway community.
The Cates family is involved with the CALL (Children of Arkansas Loved for a Lifetime) where they serve as foster parents for children in Faulkner County. Zach also serves on the board of the CALL. Zach and Kelly are members of Conway’s First Baptist Church where Zach teaches 1st-4th grade Sunday School.
“Because of baseball, I had the opportunity to travel and live all over the United States; therefore, I can say with full confidence that there is no place like Central Arkansas," he said in a statement. "My family is thankful to call Conway home. I commit to keeping Faulkner County a desirable place to live by voting to keep taxes low and using tax payer dollars to benefit the tax payer. It would be an honor and privilege to serve as Justice of the Peace for the 13th District.”
The position is for a two-year term that will begin in January 2019. The Republican primary election will be held May 22.
