Tickets are on sale for the 11th annual Bookcase Literacy fundraising banquet, which will be at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Bob & Betty Courtway Middle School Cafeteria.

The event is sponsored by the Conway Bookcase Project Committee and will feature the Sulphur Road Pickers of the Damascus area, which will treat the crowd to a bluegrass gospel music concert.

Tickets are $15.95 each or $125 for a table of 8. Attendees will receive a dinner of catfish with all the trimmings, homemade dessert and coffee, tea or water and will also receive a complimentary copy of Jim Davidson’s revised edition of “Learning, Earning and Giving Back.”

The Conway Bookcase Project Committee’s purpose to to raise funds to purchase wood and supplies to build 50 quality, personalized, oak bookcases for 4-year old children in local Head-Start families, Davidson said. He founded the committee, which to date has built and presented 700 quality personalized bookcases and a starter set of books in Conway and more than 2,000 nationwide.

“No one associated with this project earns a penny for their contribution as the project is all about giving back,” Davidson said. “We are asking guests to bring one or more new or gently-used children’s books to the banquet as they will be presented to our children at our Annual Awards Ceremony.”

The Conway project started in 2005 and has now spread to nine other communities in six states, including the latest project in Fairbanks, Alaska.

“When you think about the fact that 61 percent of children in American low-income families have few, if any, books to read and the importance of literacy to their future success, this unique literacy project becomes even more important,” Davidson said. “This is a community-wide project as 4,000 to 5,000 of our Faulkner County citizens have been involved in this project in one or more ways. It may not be common knowledge that illiteracy is the root cause for much of the crime that is happening in our society today.”

The project’s theme is Changing Lives — Changing Futures: One Child at a Time.

Tickets can be bought at the Log Cabin Democrat, Faulkner County Library, Conway Copies, Pickles Gap Village or by calling Davidson at 501-499-2179.

The members of the Conway Bookcase Project Committee include Jim Davidson, chair; Charlotte Green, Caryn Southerland, Amanda Moore, Don Powell, Cliff Garrison, Jennifer Welter, John McGraw, Kelly Sublett, Linda Linn, Mark Lollar, Mickey Cox, Nancy Mitchell, Carl Barger and Tammy Benson.
