Over the years, I have discovered that it’s much easier to start something than it is to finish it. For example, it is much easier to get married, than it is to stay married. It is much easier to register for college, than it is to graduate from college. It is much easier to start a fitness program, than it is to maintain it. It is certainly much easier to start a new business venture, than it is to keep the business venture profitable long term. So today, I want to share three reason why it’s so difficult to finish strong.
It is difficult to finish strong, when you’re currently experiencing fatigue. When you are physically, mentally, or spiritually exhausted, it is extremely difficult to keep up your current pace. I like the quote often attributed to Vince Lombardi that states, “Fatigue makes cowards of us all.” In other words, fatigue brings out the worse version of you. It makes you highly irritable, much less optimistic, and drains your energy. The Bible says it best in Isaiah 40:29-31, “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. (30)Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; (31) but those how hope in the Lord will renew their strength.” When you feel fatigue setting in, pause if you must, but refuse to give up!
It is difficult to finish strong, when you’re currently experiencing frustration. Frustrations, in my opinion, are the result of unresolved problems, unfulfilled needs, and/or dissatisfaction in the way something is going. The frustration of the moment can make you reconsider whether or not the project, goal, or opportunity is worth the effort. When I personally begin to get frustrated and overwhelmed with life’s challenges, I turn my attention to Isaiah 41:10 which states, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Don’t let every frustration get you down, because God always has your back!
It is difficult to finish strong, when you’re currently experiencing fray. The word fray simply means, “a fight, battle, or skirmish.” The reality of the matter is it is difficult to finish strong when you are facing strong opposition. When people are fighting against you and hoping for your demise, it is not easy to stay on course. However, I like the way the Apostle Paul puts it in Romans 8:31, “What, then, shall we say in response to these things, If God is for us, who can be against us?” Always remember, there is no amount of antagonism that can stop the blessings of God from coming your way. Just stay focused and trust Him!
Yes, it is much easier to start something, than it is to finish it. It can be difficult to finish strong, when you are currently experiencing fatigue, frustration, and fray. Nevertheless, with Jesus on your side all things are possible. I leave you with the words found in Nehemiah 6:3, “And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease…?”
