Following a public hearing regarding a rezoning request, the Guy City Council will hold a special-called meeting Thursday evening.

A public hearing was scheduled following the city's regularly-scheduled May council meeting to allow residents to discuss the benefits and drawbacks of rezoning a portion of the Guy-Perkins School District campus to install solar panels.

Guy-Perkins Superintendent Shade Gilbert stood before city aldermen on May 20 and said the school district hopes to rezone a portion of the school grounds from a recreational to an industrial lot so that solar panels could be installed.

The panels would be fenced in and maintained by Scenic Hill Solar staff and would save the district around $10,000 to $20,000 each year.

Gilbert said the school district is looking to enter a 28-year agreement with Scenic Hill should the council OK rezoning an 8-acre plot on the eastern side of the school’s campus.

The meeting is open to the public and will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday at Guy City Hall. The special-called city council meeting will immediately follow.

City Treasurer Rita James said the meeting "will be general discussion so that we may take care of what ever business we have."
