Conway police arrested the mother of a two-year-old boy Thursday afternoon after receiving reports of a crying child from neighbors.

Officers arrived on scene around 5:50 p.m., and could hear a child crying inside an apartment in the 200 block of Willow Street. Police said it took several minutes for the 24-year-old Conway woman to answer her door.

"While in the apartment, we witnessed the apartment to be very dirty with thrash all throughout the home," an officer noted in the incident report. "There were cigarette butts all over the living room, exposed electrical outlets, trash on the kitchen counters and floor, and beer cans on the floor of the bedroom."

The mother told police she took two of her kids — ages five and six — to school, came home, drank beer, fell asleep and did not hear her two-year-old crying.

"She did not state how much she had drank, but there were two 24 oz. cans of beer by her bed," the police report states.

The mother also informed officers she was up late the previous night partying with friends in her home. Police said there were two children in the home, the two-year-old boy and a girl, whose age was not provided in the report.

Officers said the crying two-year-old had no clothing and was running around the home. Police took the mother into custody on a fugitive warrant out of Maumelle Police Department and transported her to the Faulkner County jail.

The children were left in the custody of the woman’s father, and the Department of Human Services was notified.
