A 16-year-old boy on a motorcycle was injured in a hit-and-run accident at about 1:23 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Skyline Drive and Lower Ridge Road.
According to Lt. Danny Moody, spokesman for the Conway Police Department, the rider of the motorcycle was turning from Lower Ridge Road onto Skyline Drive when he was struck by a northbound vehicle.
The rider was thrown from the motorcycle, police said, and he was hit by another vehicle, this one southbound. The driver of this vehicle did not stop after the accident and was being sought by police Sunday.
The teen was taken by helicopter to Arkansas Children’s Hospital, where he was in critical care Sunday evening, according to Sharen Carter of CPD. Carter said doctors were cautiously optimistic that he would survive.
Communications between officers working the incident Sunday afternoon indicated that descriptions of the southbound vehicle that struck the teen varied. As of about 3:30, police were looking for a vehicle described as a white box truck similar in design to a common "U-Haul" style moving van, possibly with some sort of refrigeration unit on the cargo box.
"After a review of a video, investigators think that there was a box truck in the area at about that time, but I don’t know if that’s going to be any type of conclusive information or not," Moody said.
Police had said earlier Sunday afternoon the suspected vehicle was a pickup truck pulling a trailer. An unattended trailer was found at the nearby Walmart parking lot, Moody said, possibly abandoned by the suspect. Authorities in the Maumelle area stopped a white pickup with some damage to the front that could have been consistent with the accident.
Conway Chief of Police A.J. Gary said at about 3:45 that he didn’t think the driver stopped near Maumelle had been arrested.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the accident or can provide any information pertaining to the driver who fled the scene to contact investigators at 450-6120.
