A man was fatally shot in the Mayflower area Saturday morning. Police have a suspect in custody.

Major Andy Shock, spokesman for the Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office, said the department was dispatched at 2:53 a.m. to 737 Highway 89 South in reference to a shooting. Deputies found a man in the yard who was already dead and had a gunshot wound. He was shot by a 22 long rifle pocket Derringer, which officers found at the scene Shock said.

The suspect, Audie R. Taylor, 43, of Beebe, was still there, and after an interview with police, he admitted to shooting the victim, Shock said.

Police processed the crime scene. Based on Taylor’s admission and the Derringer, he was placed in custody. His case is being reviewed by the prosecuting attorney, but he has not been charged yet, Shock said. He added Taylor will be charged with a minimum of felon in possession of a firearm, as Taylor has an extensive nonviolent criminal history with numerous felonies.

The victim’s name had not been released by noon Saturday.
