A man is claiming self-defense in killing 37-year-old Sean Michael Engle.

Engle of Cabot was found dead outside a camper early Saturday morning near Mayflower, shot below the ribs with a .22-caliber pocket pistol. According to the Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office, the camper’s inhabitant, 43-year-old Audie R. Taylor, admitted to shooting him in self-defense.

Taylor, who also lives near Cabot according to Maj. Andy Shock of FCSO, told police that he had been at the camper for about 30 minutes when Engle came to the front door with a club-like weapon threatening to do him harm.

Taylor also told police that he had been badly beaten by Engle earlier this year, and feared that the man may have intended to kill him, Shock said.

Taylor did borrow a phone from a neighbor to call 9-1-1 after the shooting, according to Shock.

The pistol Taylor used was recovered. As a convicted felon, possession of the firearm is a class-D felony. Taylor was being held on a $10,000 bond for this charge Monday, though no homicide charges had been filed.
