The Better Business Bureau wants to help Faulkner County residents secure their identification through "Secure Your ID Day," from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at The Bear’s Den, located at the corner of Salem and Dave Ward Drive.

Mike Rohrer with the bureau said the event will be the Arkansas Better Business Bureau’s fourth, but it is the first time two locations will be involved. The other location will be the bureau office, 12521 Kanis Road in Little Rock.

Rohrer said Shred-It, which is a company accredited through the Better Business Bureau, will provide the shredding services. Sharpe Dunnaway from The Point 94.1 will broadcast live from the event. Food and prizes will be awarded throughout the day. Also one personal home shredder will be given away at each location.

"We will have a driveway set up where individuals and businesses can drop off receipts and sensitive documents," Rohrer said.

After the paper is shredded, it will be recycled.

During the last "Secure Your ID Day" at the Little Rock location, Rohrer said more than eight tons of paper was shredded. This time, the bureau hopes to shred 12 tons of paper between its two locations. During its first year, the event brought in two tons of paper.

Rohrer said 56 percent of identification theft came from lost or stolen items. By putting sensitive documents out of circulation, Rohrer said organizers hope to prevent more than half of the state’s $11 billion in identification theft.

Rohrer said if money is taken out of a community through identification theft, "it is lost forever and can hurt the community."

He said he hopes the "Secure Your ID Day" becomes a signature event for the bureau.

"It is all we will be doing that day," Rohrer said. The bureau’s national partner in the event is the Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

"It will happen rain or shine," Rohrer said.

In the future, Rohrer said the organization hopes to expand the event to all parts of the state.
