One dollar can go a long way toward making a needy child happy this holiday season.
The Log Cabin Democrat’s Community Christmas Card program collects donations, and all proceeds are distributed to Faulkner County schools. School counselors use the money raised as they see fit to help students in need. For every donation of at least $1, the giver’s name will be published in the Christmas day edition of the Log Cabin Democrat.
Conway High West counselor Kathie Houston has been in her position for 15 years, and she’s seen the program provide for many children.
"I mean, come on, everyone can give a dollar, right?," Houston said. "I know all of the animal lovers can at least give a dollar for their pets. Really, this is a wonderful program. This year we have already provided for a student whose house burned down. All of her possessions burned up in a house fire. She didn’t have anything. The only thing that she had was the clothes on her back. So we were able to provide some things for her, along with clothing."
The Community Christmas Card hit record numbers last year year, raising $19,063. But, according to Houston, some of the schools have already used all of their allocated money from the card.
"I know we work closely with the counselors on other campuses," Houston said. "I sent out an e-mail earlier this week, and the Conway High East campus was out of its Community Christmas Card fund. It’s just such a need because there are so many kids that are in need. This fund really helps our students who are at a disadvantage due to circumstances beyond their control."
Houston said their team of counselors works with the school nurse to find out students’ needs as well. The program has provided eyeglasses, coats, bicycles, food cards, Walmart gift cards and many other needed items.
"I think this is a special need because some kids don’t have food, and it’s sad for any child to go without," Darlene Sorenson, a Conway High East counselor said. "I couldn’t imagine not being able to provide for a child in need. It hurts my heart. This is not for anything that the kids want, but it’s for their basic needs. I’ve seen this program do so much for these kids. A simple donation can make these kids have an easier and happier holiday."
