According to Mayor Tab Townsell, the Conway City Council will be briefed at 5:30 this afternoon on a multidepartmental plan “to find enough operational cuts so that they don’t have to do payroll cuts.”

Townsell said that Conway department heads submitted plans this morning outlining cost-cutting measures totalling more than $850,000 over the course of 12 months. These savings, combined with the $450,000 that would be freed up by not purchasing a fire truck approved by the council in December, would be enough to bring the reserve from $1.2 million to Townsell’s “prudent” reserve figure of $2.5 million.

The council will be presented with an ordinance to realign departmental budgets to this effect.
