Greenbrier Nursing and Rehab Center will host a community event Saturday, the Back to School Backpack Bash, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Every first-grader in the Greenbrier School District is invited to receive a free backpack with school supplies. Backpacks geared for both male and female students contain pencils, a notebook, watercolor paint, glue sticks, crayons and a supply box.

Stacey Ussery, the center’s administrator, said the residents chose this effort as a way to give back to their community.

"Two hundred and sixty backpacks have been stuffed. We’ve been so successful in this community, and many of the residents have grown up here and love the community. They want to give back to it," Ussery said.

Ussery said that staff and residents are "big on education" and agreed that the backpack program was a good starting place for community involvement.

The center is home to 80 residents, and many have great ties and several years in common with the area.

Ussery said that the center’s residents have wanted to provide a community service, but it is difficult for many to be out of the facility in that capacity.

"We wondered what we could do to help the community, and have them come to us. Our residents love children and always want to help others."

The Bash will also have a special appearance from The Cat in the Hat, and there will be an ice cream sundae bar.

Another opportunity to attend will be from 7-8 p.m. Aug. 10.
