Greenbrier Nursing and Rehab Center residents handed out backpacks to area first-graders Saturday morning during the center’s first Backpack Bash.
Several students stopped by the center to pick up a backpack with free school supplies. The backpacks, which included every design from Spiderman to Hannah Montana to camouflage, were geared toward both male and female students and contained pencils, a notebook, watercolor paint, glue sticks, crayons and a supply box.
The event also featured The Cat in the Hat, as well as an ice cream sundae bar.
Greenbrier Nursing and Rehab Center Administrator Stacey Ussery said the event was a way to bring the community and residents together.
"Many of the residents have been in this area for a long time, and they love the kids," Ussery said. "This is a great way to get the kids and the community here with the residents."
Ussery said the residents would love to get out in the community, but it would be difficult for many of them. The staff and residents felt the bash would be a great summer project that could involve the community, Ussery said.
The center will host a second backpack bash from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday.
