Need a last-minute Christmas gift?

Perfect for the animal lover is the 2011 calendar published by the Friends of the Conway Animal Shelter.

“The calendar is $5, and proceeds go to the Friends who pour all their efforts into helping the animal shelter,” said Shona Osborne, shelter manager.

The Friends use the funds they raise to help with veterinarian bills and other expenses for dogs and cats in anticipation of their adoption,

Employees of the Animal Welfare Unit get a photo spread, too, featuring Osborne with Alan Burris, Lindsey Droste, Crystal Hinson, Josh Clay, Austin Padgett and Bibi Rodriguez.

Dogs outnumber cats in this year’s calendar, and there’s also a photo of a frisky Arabian colt.

The colorful calendars are available at several locations throughout the town including the animal shelter, vets’ offices, groomers and Stromboli’s at 2665 Donaghey Ave.

At that flying pizza parlor is where you’ll meet the family that belongs to Marley, a 3 1/2 year-old golden retriever who was picked to grace the cover of the calendar.

The Stauffers, Ken, Robin, Taylor and Collin are big fans of the cover girl.

“She wakes us up every morning with a howl — like a rooster,” said Collin, age 8. “She loves the Frisbee. We just have to say the word and she gets so excited she spins around and around.”

Taylor, 10, said: “I like it when she sleeps with me.”

Another endearing trick is Marley’s response to the command to “Whisper.”

“Her lips barely move, and she makes a soft barking sound,” said Robin Morrisey-Stauffer, who took the photo selected by the Friends.

“Marley’s favorite spot is under my desk while I’m working,” Morrisey-Stauffer said.

Those who would like a pet featured in next year’s calendar can send a photo to the Friends of the Conway Animal Shelter at The deadline is Nov. 30, 2011.
