The 7A girls state championship game involving Conway High and Bentonville on Saturday has been moved from a 2 p.m. start to a 6 p.m. start in Fayetteville on Saturday to give the CHS senior players and their families a chance to attend graduation ceremonies.
The championship game, originally set for the early afternoon start at Lady Back Yard in Fayetteville, had conflicted directly with Conway High's graduation ceremonies, which are set to begin at 2 at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock, about three hours away. The senior members of the Conway soccer team, which will enter the game with a 21-0 record, will receive their diplomas early in the ceremony to allow them to travel to the title game.
Dr. Greg Murry, Conway superintendent, and officials from the Arkansas Activities Association and Bentonville High School reached an agreement to change the schedule Tuesday.
"Bentonville was happy to oblige. We looked at several options and this was the best one," Murry said.
The 7A state title games, the only ones to be played Saturday in Fayetteville, were originally scheduled at 2 p.m. for girls and 4 p.m. for boys. The 4 p.m. contest was to be the last of the day.
"We wanted to reach some kind of arrangement so the Conway girls to make a hard decision and a choice between the two (graduation and playing in the state championship game)," Murry said.
The Conway baseball team will also play in a state title game Saturday but that game against Bryant is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. as the fourth championship game of the day at the University of Central Arkansas' Bear Field.
"Even if the game starts right at 5:30, the baseball players should have plenty of time to get from North Little Rock to Conway for the game," Murry said.
