Two all-time weather records were established at Conway during the month ending today.

According to E. E. Cordrey, local observer for the United States weather bureau, it was the driest August on record, with only .20 inch precipitation, this occurring on the second day of the month. The highest temperature ever officially recorded in Conway also occurred when 115 degrees was registered Aug. 10. The previous high mark was 114 degrees, recorded on three separate dates in July and August of 1930.

James S. Upton Jr., son of Dr. and Mrs. J.S. Upton of Conway, received a Master of Music degree from southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, at SMU’s summer convocation last Sunday. The degree was awarded in absentia.

The younger Upton is band director at Fordyce High School. He also is a graduate of Hendrix College.

Robert F. Saunders of Conway, a member of the Arkansas Air National Guard’s 189th Information Systems Flight at Little Rock Air Force Base in Jacksonville, has been promoted to the rank of staff sergeant.

Strike Force, a 10-and-under competitive fast-pitch team, placed fourth in the recent USSSA Class A 10-and-under World Series in Southaven, Miss. The team, which one the ASA District 10 title, went 6-3 in the five-day tournament. As part of a series of contests in conjunction with the world Series, Taryn Castellani was first in base running. The team members are: Gretchen Wahl, Jenny Beth Davis, Krisitn Shock, Jayme Wilcox, Hannah Tiner, Amber Lilley, Taryn Castellani, Riley Perrigo, Jordan Tetens, LaToya McCoy, Mallory Fiddler and Jessica Sheldon. Coaches are: Jim Sheldon, Brian Wahl and Steve McCoy.
