Elementary school children were encouraged to "get truckin’" on their floats for the annual Faulkner County Fair Parade, set for Sept. 20.
The theme is "Movie Madness."
"We expect some pretty cool floats this year," said Mark Ledbetter, co-chair of the elementary float division with Deanna Ott.
Ledbetter said float trailers will be limited to 26 feet in length this year. Some last year were almost too long to turn the corners, he said.
Conway Fire Chief Bart Castleberry reported that the giant flag that flies over Toad Suck Square will be back.
Parade Chairman Rick Sublett said Miss Arkansas Kristen Glover and the Fair Queen, yet to be chosen, will be riding in the parade.
The honor of leading the parade — both in the lead car and the marching band — will be announced next week, Sublett said.
Vilonia had the honors last year, Faulkner County Clerk Melinda Reynolds said.
Fletcher Smith, former chairman and longtime member of the parade committee, paid tribute to two longtime supporters of the parade, now deceased.
Lenton Taylor and Tom Shaw, both World War II veterans who passed away at age 87, assisted with parade planning and day-of activities. Shaw was a mechanic and welder and Taylor was retired from the Street Department with the City of Conway, Smith said.
The parade committee will meet at noon Tuesday at Ryan’s to continue planning for the parade.
