Lodie V. Biggs, agent in Conway for the Magnolia Petroleum Company and an overseas veteran of the world war, last night was elected commanding officer of Theodore Campbell post No. 16 of the American Legion. Mr. Biggs will succeed Thurman E. Rowlett. 

Other officers were elected as follows: T. C. Harty of Greenbrier, vice commander; J. E. Lyon, treasurer (re-elected); Simon Dean, chaplain, and Jim Cheek, sergeant-at-arms.


50 years ago 


Gary Standefer, who was scheduled to attend the University of Arkansas on a football scholarship, this week enrolled at Arkansas State Teachers College, but is not out for football. Standefer, an outstanding high school tackle, played in the Arkansas High School All-Star game in Little Rock in August.

Paulette Baker, a senior at Vilonia High School, recently was elected president of the Cooperative Education Club for the 1986-87 school year.

Other officers elected were Ronna Coker, vice president; Karyn Goss, secretary; Angie Stapleton, treasurer; Rick Waller, sergeant-at-arms; Kevin Brannon, parliamentarian; Tina Halter, reporter, and Christy Stone and Beth Garrett, historians.

The club voted to sponsor Miss Baker as a candidate for the office of state GCECA reporter at the organization’s officer elections Thursday, Oct. 2, at the University of Central Arkansas.

Beverly Imboden is the GCE coordinator and club sponsor.

Ruth E. Glover was presented with a service pin and plaque at the Conway Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners’ dinner on Sept. 17. The plaque was from the Arkansas Chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials for 25 years of service.
